Some Investigations on Cracking Characteristics of Soils

چکیده

Fine-grained soils, in particular, expansive soils are prone to cracking. For these soils swelling-shrinking potential is quite high and hence they exhibit adverse affect on overall stability of geotechnical structures. This phenomenon may also be responsible for alteration of various engineering properties of soils such as hydraulic conductivity, water and leachate penetration, solute transport, stability of slopes, etc. Previous studies demonstrate that several factors mainly moisture content, clay content and its type, particle size and its shape, tensile strength, etc., largely control the cracking characteristics of the soil mass. With this in view, researchers have mainly concentrated on quantifying and modeling the crack geometry. Also, most of the studies are confined to evaluation of the cracking potential of the soil when it achieves completely dry state. However, not many efforts have been made to investigate crack initiation in soils and its propagation with time. This paper presents details of the initial attempts made by the researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to investigate cracking characteristics of finegrained soils.

Numerical Modeling of Desiccation Cracking in Compacted Soils

Desiccation cracking and its implications will be more of an issue due to the global warming trends. Soils tend to shrink when they lose moisture. In particular, fine-grained soils are susceptible to shrinkage and the resulting volume change. Shrinkage can cause cracking of soils that can adversely impact the engineering properties and behavior of the soils. As a result, the integrity of struct...

بررسی عوامل مؤثر بر رفتار ترک‌پذیری خاک‌های شالیزاری(مطالعه موردی استان گیلان)

Intermittent irrigation of paddy fields with long intervals can cause cracks in heavy soils, facilitate loss of water and finally damage the crop. This study was carried out in order to investigate the cracking trend and some other factors affecting soil cracking in four different physiographical areas of paddy field. The study areas were Rasht, Shanderman, Astaneh and Khomam in Guilan province...

Comparison of pedogenic properties of some paddy and nonpaddy soils of southern Iran

ABSTRACT- Paddy soils make up the largest anthropogenic wetlands on earth. Present study was performed to investigate and compare soil formation of paddy soils with long-term rice cultivation history with non-paddy soils and study the effect of waterlogging on soil pedogenesis. Soil samples were taken from paddy and non-paddy soils derived from the same calcareous parent materials. Some pedogen...
